Ropes Course-a must for building a team

This past Saturday, I joined 16 student government officers for a day of leadership and team building at Westminster Woods in Occidental. At the beginning of every spring semester, I work with two board members to plan a one day mid year leadership retreat.  For the spring retreat, I’ve always used Westminster Woods Confrence center but never their ropes course. All I can say now is the ropes course is a must! Any time you get a group of people to play games, solve problems and climb trees; you are bound to have a changed group. And that is what happen to my  group. Thanks Westminster Woods! I am excited to see how my group acts this week. Monday night, we’ve got The Big Game with Napa’s Women and Men basketball teams playing neighbor rival Solano Community College and Club Rush on Wednesday and Thursday.

Birthday Memories

Today is my 32 birthday. Yahoo! Life is good. I took the day off from work. My new motto for my 30’s is no working on your birthday. I was telling my sister last night that I’ve come to appreciate birthdays more. This morning, I was thinking of some pretty cool birthday memories.
•    My Mom and Dad putting my sister and me on the birthday list for the Grass Valley local morning radio news program. Every year! Then on the way to school, they always made sure we heard it.
•    The Super bowl party for my 20th birthday. I think my birthday actually landed on the Super Bowl that year. Marta and I always share stories about that party.
•    I recently watched the video of my 13th birthday. I think it was my first coed pizza birthday party. My friends Melissa and Natalya did all the girls’ hair and there was slow dancing.  Ahh…junior high…
Today, my husband Matthias has some things planned for the day. My only task is to meet him at Noon, dressed for the outdoors and with my present in hand.

We did well today America

Today, I could not join the many thousands who stood through the cold and the wind to see Obama become the 44th U.S. President. But, I want you to know, my thoughts were there. I truly believe all of us, in our own special way, took a moment to reflect that change has come to America. The good change. The change that moves people forward. The change that gets you thinking about your own personal assumptions or fears or even hopes. The kind of change you are happy for. Everything happens for a reason. And everything happens because of something before it. No one is perfect. But today is a new day for all of us. I loved how forgiveness and humility and pull yourself up, because you can America! This is America. What is your dream? (Sorry, was tunneling “Pretty Woman” for a second there), was the main themes of the day. I loved the prayers spoken. I loved the poem given. I love my DVR so I could go back and watch it when I got home. We did well today America. We did great!

Living your best life

This week, I have DVR Oprah’s Best Life week. I know, I know..Oprah…but I am telling you, you will be surpised. On Monday, she shared deeply about how in 2 years she reached her weight goal and then turnred around and gained 40 pounds. What happen? She says it was a result of thinking, just like in many areas of our lives, “I don’t have to work on that any more”. From that I show, I learned from her that our life’s journey with our bodies, our spriti, our wants will be a life long journey and now is the time to realize that.

Yesterday, the show was about healthy eating habbits. From what I gain from show, Matthias and I are eating very well. The one thing I learned is the longer your food can sit on the shelf, the more likely it is not the best food for ya.

Tonight, was the third episode and it was on spirituality. Oprah said something that really stuck a cord for me. She said, “Everything you really want, you already have”. . . Wow, I think all the time, I really want a job that honors my master’s degree and my work in Student Affairs. What i have right now, is a job that honored and supported my journey to my master’s. What better way could they have honored my work in student life by letting me use my work for homework assignments and supporting new ideas I had like starting a Student Ambassador program. I want to have a baby to love. What I already have in my life to love is my husband, my parents, my sister, my friends, the list goes on, my students. What Oprah said, does make a lot of sense. What you want in your life, you already have. Think about it.

Budget Cuts

Lately, with the news on California budget cuts and the unknown of what the next two years will bring to Higher Education, I’ve been wondering;
-If there are no jobs, how will our students pay for their classes? Or their housing?  How will they be able to stay in school?
-If they are predicting that more people will need to come back to school for job training, why do we start offering less courses instead of more?
-If colleges are having to cut back, why are we not asking what is best for the students?
