Trivia Night team “We Don’t Know Much”

I love date night, especially when Matthias and I meet at Murphy’s Pub for Wednesday Night Trivia. After three years of living in Sonoma, we finally one Trivia night! I have to admit, we ususally stay for 2 rounds at the most. But tonight, we stayed through all 5 rounds plus the picture round. Our team name was “We don’t know much”. There were 21 teams. Winners were 1st, 2nd and 9th. For 9th, there was a three way tie and one of teams was us!! We also solved the mystery of team “Eurotrash”.  And guess what, two are from England, one from Spain and one from Germany. We’ve been wondering for years if they really were..you know…from Europe. Maybe next time, we’ll sit by them.

Spring Break 09

I realized this morning that one year ago this week, was also Spring Break, and I had spent that week finishing my capstone (the portfolio section of my blog). When I think back I remember it being a lot of work! I had fun though. I had to organizing all my essays, upload examples, photos, etc. I sure learned a lot about pdf.

A year later though, I am happy to share that this Spring Break I spend the week catching up with friends and family. Here are a few high lights:

  • Playing chicken foot dominoes with my sister and Grandma Grace in Tustin Ca.
  • Hiking with Maria and having this amazing clear view from the top of the Sonoma Overlook trail
  • Randomly playing bowling on a Wednesday afternoon with my Dad in Grass Valley
  • Watching Lost with my parents and seeing them totally understanding the plot and having a blast, while I am totally “lost” (he he)
  • Text messages Matthias while he is chilling at GDC (Gaming Development Conference) in S.F., feeling pretty lucky

Notes from Observing How to Teach Community College Success Courses

This semester I am observing Marci Sanchez’s Tuesday/Thursday 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. Counseling 98: Learning Community Experience/Community College Experience. The Counseling College Success course is paired up with English 85 as part of the English Learning Communities. The ELC program has had excellent retention rates and has done my favorite student affairs thing; built community for those students. I decided to make time in my schedule this spring to observe because I learned over winter break that the graduate program I was part of less than a year ago added one more course requirement and changed the degree to Master of Science in College Counseling and Student Development. It originally was called Master of Education in College Student Affairs (CSA).  I am scheduled to take the additional course in summer of 2009.

During my time researching and writing about the field of student affairs, I discovered that I also have a passion to engage students about the college experience at the classroom level as well. I’ve really enjoyed sitting in her class. I hope down the road I can be part of the ELC teaching community or teach one of many counseling college success courses colleges offer.  I think understanding more of the faculty site of the house will make me a better college leader and advsor to students.

Since being part of Marci’s class I have learned:

  • what needs to be in a syllabus such as information on learning accommodations, attendance policy, late work policy and grade chart.
  • how to use Career /Personality assessments such as CareerDimension.com and the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)
  • how to write class objectives and be flexable at the same time.
  • teaching “College Success” really comes down to helping students understand why they are in college in the first place and helping them to over come the fears they carry with them about learning.

My Picks for the Chase

The 2009 NASCAR season is alive and kicking. Today was an awesome race in Las Vegas. Each race, Matthias and I pick 2 drivers. Whose ever driver comes the closest to winning, wins that race. Today, Matthias picked Kurt Busch, I picked Jimmy Johnson and right towards the end, Jimmy crashes and ends up finishing right behind Kurt. Sad Face. This year, I’m going to create some “bonus” points just in case I fall really behind on my picks. So, I’m having us pick now who we think is going to land in the top 12 for the Chase. 26 races before we get there. The most picked drivers who makes it into the chase wins bonus points.
My Picks (in no special order)
#18 Kyle Busch
#24 Jeff Gordon
#14 Tony Stewart
#31 Jeff Burton
#5 Mark Martin
#99 Carl Edwards
(this is harder then I thought)
#17 Matt Kenneth
#2 Kurt Busch
#88 Jr.
#16 Greg Biffle
#9 Kasey Kaine
#83 Brian Vickers

Finding My Leadership Style

I’ve been noticing something new about myself in the last couple months. I’m discovering my own style of leadership. But at the same time, I’ve felt uneasy about showing it. One side of my leadership style is that I want everyone around me to have the same kind of energy and excitement as I do. I want them to follow through and aim to do great work. But the reality I’m facing is that what might be a priority for me, might not be for that person.  I saw this poem on my co-hort’s member Tira’s blog. It rings true to what I’ve been feeling lately.  Thanks Tira for sharing!

Anyway

People are often unreasonable, Illogical, and self-centered
Forgive them anyway
If you are kind People may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives
Be kind anyway
If you are successful, You will win some false friends and some true enemies
Succeed anyway
If you are honest and frank, People may cheat you
Be honest and frank anyway
What you spend years building, Someone could destroy overnight
Build anyway
If you find serenity and happiness, They may be jealous
Be happy anyway
The good you do today, People will often forget tomorrow
Do good anyway
Give the world the best you have, And it may never be enough
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway

You see, in the final analysis It is between you, your self, and God . . .
It never was between you and them anyway

Ash Wednesday

During Lent, I remove the candy from my candy bowl that sits on my desk. I’ve discovered, that when working at a Public College, it can be a challenge to work in the Spirituality. In away, taking away chocolate for 40 days creates a conversation about religion can trigger a fun reminder that they need to pencil in some faith on their must get done list.  I am not sure if I will make it to mass today. My local Catholic churches are still not advertising mass times on the Internet. In my heart, I will keep today’s daily word meditation.

Daily Word — Wednesday, February 25, 2009
Dedicate
I am discovering and contributing to blessings of the heart.
In meditative prayer, I am completely at ease as I identify my values: what is mine to do that resonates most within my heart, mind, and soul. I ask myself what I can give to life rather than what I can receive.

Pace yourself poem

I need to pace myself
I need to welcome in relax time
I believe we will have fun playing Rock Band at next week’s Student Affairs Professional Conference
I need to pace myself
I need to turn the computer off and read a book
I believe everything I am working will come together
I need to pace myself
I need to forgive and welcome help that is offered
I believe our Annual African American Celebration Dinner will have  great food and the live jazz will be sweet
I need to pace myself

Love where you live

Today, I learned the important lesson of loving the place you call home. I had a very Student Affairs day. It was filled with catching up on unanswered emails due to being out sick on Tuesday, getting in a 30 minute lunch before running off to a committee meeting to than turn around and advise an extra long student government meeting . As I was driving home, I got the craving for Thai Food and went down to the Sonoma Plaza. As I was walking to the restaurant, I realized how much I love Sonoma, and in away, I can’t do all I do with college students without having a place I love to call home.

We must refuel. To be our best to ourselves, to our students, to our staff, we must have a place, a way to refuel.

Weekend Update

On Tuesday, Matthias and I saw our third Oscar Best Picture nominee “Milk” at the Sebastian Theatre. As I watched the film, I realized how much I love the connection I have with San Francisco and its history. My parents met while living in South San Francisco in the 70’s. Since the film came out, my parents have been sharing with me how they can clearly remember Harvey Milk, his death and the rise of the now known “Gay” Castro. For the film, Sean Penn was amazing. He has my vote for best actor. I think this movie is going to have a future in the classroom. If I could, I would show it right now as a way to teach Gay Civil Rights history.

On Wednesday, my student government offices hosted I love the 80’s CLUB RUSH. I brought the idea of CLUB RUSH with me as awhile to create a 4 year “Rush Recruiting” experience at the two year college. Now, it has become part of campus culture. This year CLUB RUSH took on a whole new vibe. The vice president incorporated games and themes into CLUB RUSH. All I can say is my 13 year old self would have been proud with I love the 80’s theme. Now, you have to remember, most of today’s freshmen and sophomore college students were born in the 80’s or early 90’s. Over a two day period around the noon time hour, 20 student organizations rocked out to Madonna, Michael Jackson, Run DMC, recruited new club members, bonded and learned something new about the decade they were born in. I was born in the 70’s and I’m still learning about how people dressed and what music they listened to.

On Thursday, I got sucked into watching Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy. For the last 2 weeks, the producers have decided to combine the story line since Private Practice is really a spin off of Grey’s Anatomy. It’s cool. Dr. McDreamy ex-wife’s brother got worms in the brain and the only brain sergeant that could really get them out is of course McDreamy. Ironically, the ex-wife star of Private Practice called him while he was spreading roses all over this bed because he was going to propose to his girlfriend Meredith Grey right after the got off the phone. Which, did not happen because he rushed to the hospital to take care of his ex-brother in law he never got along with in the first place. Ahh…my point is now I better be ready to stay up until 11 on Thursday nights. I will have to say, the Private Practice cast has a lot of my old favorite actors such as the awesome Judge Amy from “Judging Amy”. However, the show itself has a slow story line. As for my Grey’s Anatomy, keep up the great writing! Even if that means you have to write people off the show, which I don’t agree with but that is for another Weekend Update.
